AGM CELEBRATES TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT DEMENTIA SUFFERERS

Jill Broadhead, Trustee of Crossroads Care Wessex, was delighted to welcome Dr Nigel Harris, Director of The Bath Institute of Medical Engineering (BIME), to their AGM which took place on Monday 14 November at The Radstock Museum.
Living at home with dementia can be challenging and the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering is constantly working to develop new products making life safer and less confusing for people with this disabling condition. Dr Nigel Harris told his audience how he really strives to make a difference. Some of the products seem simple and yet are so useful. For example, if a person gets up at night and wanders around a sensor can be installed that, when activated, plays a pre-recorded message telling the person that it’s the middle of the night and to go back to bed. Or a simple digital photo frame that is programmed to show the day and time period e.g. ‘It’s Thursday morning’. These are the kind of things that could make the life of a dementia sufferer much more manageable and can be a great support to people who care for them. Dr Harris answered a number of questions from an interested audience prior to the main business of the AGM taking place.
Lesley Braithwaite, Trustee, was generous in her praise of the staff and thanked them for all their hard work before handing over to Helen Storey, Chief Executive Officer, who gave an overview of the past year and set out the intentions for the the year ahead.
